Hooe, near Battle

The brief

The client had a clear vision: three distinct pieces of kitchen cabinetry, each designed to look as if it had been added at a different point in the house’s long history.

  • Square in-frame shaker cabinetry with oak-veneered carcasses
  • Sprayed in a limewash paint, hung on butt hinges
  • A slightly more modern look, as if added in a later period of the house
  • Freestanding, made entirely from solid oak
  • Oiled inside and sprayed outside, with the wood grain still showing through
  • Freestanding, built from solid beech
  • 70mm solid oak worktop with breadboard ends, machined in-house with mortise and tenon joints. The ends stop the boards cupping and support the seating overhang
  • Top run of drawers (approx. 200mm) over two tiers of slatted solid oak shelving
  • Heavily hand-distressed to the client’s “driftwood” brief: whipped with chains, scored with flap discs, corners eased and knots gouged out

Traditional drawer action

  • No modern runners or soft-close, at the client’s request
  • Drawers rebated onto waxed wooden slides for an authentic, old-fashioned feel

Further work throughout the house

  • Bespoke cabinetry for the downstairs cloakroom, with a black WC
  • Black and oak freestanding vanity unit for a bathroom
  • High-gloss, sapele-stained freestanding vanity unit for the master bathroom
  • All three topped with black marble
